Winterizing Your Horse

October 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The days are getting shorter.  The weather has been beautiful, but fall is in the air.

My Owner(MO) has a list of things she likes to get done every fall before the weather turns really cold.

  • Worm Can Can and ME in Oct–Can Can will be sweet and willing; I will not!
  • Check out the winter blankets and clean/repair/purchase new.  Can Can will get to wear her old one.  I get a new cooler and blanket from Schneider’s.
  • Put away the horse stuff that might freeze.
  • Pick up my “practice” bridge and put it out of the way.
  • Organize the Round Hay bales efficiently–use as windbreaks around my pen, if possible.
  • Test the water tank heaters and put in tanks.
  • Take the lead ropes off the horse walker until Spring–cover the motor.
  • Work on fencing pasture for ME.

What’s on your list of things to get done before Winter hits?  Winter weather and temps up to 40 below can stop our area dead in our tracks.  MO leaves her vehicle running in the parking lot when she goes inside to purchase groceries.   She has a remote starter for her pickup, so the pickup will be toasty warm when she gets in each morning and every night after work.
