This is a little bit of a touchy subject with ME……I understand that horse meat is a delicacy in some countries.
What will happen to ME if the bill goes through? Probably nothing. I think My Owner(MO) loves me enough to take care of me, either way. Can Can is 24 years old and has tenured stay at our place; earned by her ability to win barrel racing and pole bending in 4-H and HS Rodeo. I think I will earn a tenured stay, also, partially due to my beautiful color and my winning personality. However, Lani left in the horse trailer last weekend and did not return with MO.
Horses understand Survival of the Fittest. It’s been a horse policy forever. Where I grew up, the old horses would some times lay down in the winter and never get up again. We accepted it as part of horse life. Even though we had plenty of feed, sometimes the old ones just couldn’t eat enough to keep up with everyday life. When temps are cold, it becomes more of a struggle for an older horse to get enough to eat pawing through snow and our digestive tracts don’t work like they used to.
What is the right answer for an old horse? Should he be euthanized? sent to slaughter? or simply left to move to the next world at his own pace and time?
Do our owners have the right to choose our fate or will we become regulated by the government? Is this the land of the free? Are there more and more fences appearing on the horizon?
